Birmingham Library Jail Experience

On the 10th March four of our residential pupils visited the Birmingham Library which was featuring a ‘Go to Jail’ project. The Cell Project consists of a replica prison cell, complete with regulation fixtures and fittings, that is home to two ‘prisoners’ who are willing to talk about their daily lives and answer any questions you may have. The prisoners are all ex-offenders.

It was a positive experience for the four pupils.   They were all very apprehensive at first but soon became confident and were able to exchange life experiences (life at home, bedroom at school and isolation at school).  They all agreed it was not something they wanted to pursue in the future.

The ex-offenders commented on how charming and bright our pupils were as they responded confidently to the questions the ex-offenders posed and our pupils asked many questions of  them whilst they were in the cell.   The pupil’s behaviour and approach was positive and exemplary.

On return to the Steven Sutton House (Residential Unit) the pupils completed an on-line survey about their visit which they thoroughly enjoyed.
